Coaching notes
Coaching Notes — The Rook
Likely misconceptions
- “Any open file is good.” A rook needs an entry square or target; a file with no penetration can be strategically secondary.
- Moving the active rook instead of the bad rook. Keep a well-placed rook doing its job and improve the idle one.
- Opening the file too early. The pawn break is irreversible; pre-position the rook and prevent the opponent from closing or seizing the file first.
- Doubling mechanically. Sometimes a blocker must be exchanged or deflected before doubling has value.
- Thinking only vertically. Rook lifts across a rank can be the fastest attacking or defensive route.
- Ignoring tactical validation. Back-rank tactics and knight forks often decide whether a rook manoeuvre is sound.
10-minute follow-up drill
- Show Model positions 1-3 for two minutes each with the moves hidden.
- For each, require three answers only: Which rook is worst placed? Which line should it use? What is the opponent’s best counter-idea?
- Use the final four minutes to compare the three routes: doubling on a file, a third-rank rook lift, and a multipurpose lateral transfer.
Spaced-review question for 7-14 days later
When you see a potentially open file, what should normally happen first: the pawn exchange or the rook repositioning? Give one condition that would make you reverse that order.
