Likely misconceptions

Suggested 75-90 minute lesson flow

  1. Retrieval question and checklist review - 8 minutes.
  2. Core concept and the three model positions - 22 minutes.
  3. Exercises 1-5 in pairs - 25 minutes.
  4. Exercises 6-10 individually - 25 minutes.
  5. Error classification and one-sentence takeaway - 8 minutes.

Ten-minute follow-up drill

Show three positions for ninety seconds each. For every position, the student must name: (1) the safest king zone, (2) the opponent’s fastest line-opening method, and (3) one king move that also improves another piece. Use one open-centre position, one locked-centre position, and one position with forcing checks. Spend the final five minutes comparing the student’s first choice with a second viable king plan.

Spaced-review question for 7-14 days later

Both castling sides look unsafe. Before rejecting a one-square king move or a king march, which four concrete tests must you perform?

Expected retrieval points: centre stability; opponent’s forcing checks and pawn breaks; safety of every transit square; and whether the king move activates or connects another piece.
