Facilitating an Attack with Exchanges - Coaching Notes
Likely misconceptions
- “Exchanges reduce attacking chances.” The correction is to evaluate the defender removed and the lines opened, not the number of pieces left.
- “Any defender near the king should be exchanged.” Students must name the concrete square, file or break that improves after the trade.
- “The exchange itself is the plan.” Require a follow-up move: a pawn break, queen entry, rook lift or tactical threat.
- Ignoring the recapture. The recapturing pawn or piece can either weaken the king or repair the defence; this must be calculated.
- Assuming the defender must accept. Compare the exchange with the best refusal and identify the concession gained if the defender retreats.
10-minute follow-up drill
Show five of the exercise boards for 60 seconds each. The student may not calculate variations at first. For each board they must say only: (1) the key defender, (2) the exchange mechanism, and (3) the immediate follow-up. Use the remaining five minutes to compare their three-part diagnosis with the answer key.
Spaced-review question for 7-14 days later
Before calculating an attacking exchange, what four things must you name? Expected structure: the defender, what line/square becomes available, the immediate follow-up, and the tactical detail that makes the exchange work against the best defence.
