Coaching notes
Coaching Notes: Facilitating the Defence
Likely misconceptions
- "Any exchange helps the defender." The student must identify the attacking piece whose removal actually changes the position.
- "Trade queens automatically." A queen exchange is useful only if the resulting position is acceptable; material, structure and activity still matter.
- Only immediate captures count. Several model positions require a preparatory move before the exchange can be forced.
- Structural damage must always be avoided. A manageable weakness can be an acceptable price for eliminating a direct attack.
- Stopping one threat is enough. The student should evaluate what the opponent can do after the exchange and then activate the defending pieces.
- Strategic idea without calculation. Intermediate checks, recaptures and refusal of the exchange must be calculated before committing.
10-minute follow-up drill
Show five positions from this handout for 90 seconds each. For every position the student must answer only three questions: (1) name the opponent's most important attacking piece; (2) choose exchange now, prepare an exchange, or do not exchange; and (3) name the most important feature of the resulting position. Use the final 2.5 minutes to compare answers and correct the student's diagnosis before discussing moves.
Spaced-review question for 7-14 days later
When you are under attack, which enemy piece would you most like to exchange, and what must be true about the resulting position before you commit to that exchange?
