Coaching Notes - Gaining Space
Likely misconceptions
- "Any pawn push gains space." A useful advance must control relevant squares or restrict something concrete; otherwise it may only create a target.
- "More space means attack immediately." The usual order is restrict first, improve the pieces second, then open lines.
- Ignoring the vacated square. Students often notice the square the pawn controls but miss the square it leaves behind for a rook, bishop, knight, or queen.
- Overextending with the king still vulnerable. Kingside pawn gains are especially risky when the centre is open.
- Failing to stop the freeing break. A space advantage can disappear quickly if the opponent achieves the correct pawn break.
- Attacking only one wing. Once the defender is cramped, a second front is often stronger than adding more pieces to the first.
10-minute follow-up drill
Use four positions from the exercise set: Exercises 2, 4, 7, and 9. Give 90 seconds per position. The student must state only four things before proposing a move: (1) where space can be gained, (2) what it restricts, (3) which piece benefits, and (4) the opponent's most dangerous freeing break. Spend the final four minutes comparing the four diagnoses. Do not calculate more than three moves.
Spaced-review question (7-14 days)
You have more space but no immediate tactic. Before pushing another pawn, what three checks should you make?
Expected answer: identify the opponent's freeing break, improve the worst-placed piece using the extra squares, and decide whether a second front is safer or stronger than another advance on the same wing. Add a king-safety check before any flank pawn push.
Source inventory
Theory: printed pages 134-141, PDF pages 135-142. Exercise pages read: printed pages 329-330, PDF pages 330-331. The topic index lists original positions 163-174, but the permitted exercise PDF pages contain positions 163-172; those ten were selected so the workflow stays inside the indexed page range.
Selected original positions: 163-172. Solution pages used for those positions: printed pages 412-415, PDF pages 413-416. The solution locator's suggested review range extended one extra PDF page, to 417, to catch possible continuation; the selected solutions themselves finish by PDF page 416.

Crop quality-control notes
- The source PDF hash in both crop manifests matches the current source file.
- All ten student exercise diagrams were visually checked as board-only crops with complete borders and no surrounding text.
- The page-331 automatic detection order is not the same as reading order: the detected crop for original Position 171 precedes the crop for Position 168. The neutral exercise mapping was corrected manually before authoring.
- The first model's automatic context crop included one line of surrounding prose. The complete handout therefore uses a clean title-plus-board derivative while retaining the original context-crop filename in the source mapping.
