Coaching Notes - Creating Weaknesses

Likely misconceptions

10-minute follow-up drill

Show Exercises 3, 6, and 8 without the hints. Give the student 90 seconds per position to write only three items: (1) the square or pawn to be weakened, (2) the pawn move that creates the weakness, and (3) the piece that will exploit it. Then replay the best line for two or three moves and compare the predicted target with the actual transformation.

Spaced-review question for 7-14 days later

“Before playing an irreversible pawn move, what three things must you be able to name?” Expected answer: the target that will become weak, the piece or route that will exploit it, and the opponent’s most forcing counterplay.

Source inventory

Theory range: printed pages 142-155; PDF pages 143-156. Exercise range consulted: printed pages 331-333; PDF pages 332-334. Selected original positions: 175, 176, 178, 179, 181, 183, 185, 186, 188, 190. Solution pages consulted for selected positions: PDF pages 417-422 (printed 416-421).

Crop manifests: examples/crop_manifest.json and exercises/crop_manifest.json. Both were generated from the current source PDF at 200 DPI and share the current source hash.

Crop verification note: the automatic example-title matcher associated the Example 120 title with the wrong nearby board and included extra prose in the Example 117 title crop. Both model contexts were manually rebuilt from the same rendered source pages using the verified board crops and the correct title blocks. Exercise Position 179 was also visually remapped to board index 2 on PDF page 333; board index 1 belongs to Position 182. These corrections prevent the wrong-board association seen in dense two-column pages.
