Pawn Majorities - Coaching Notes
Likely misconceptions
- Counting instead of evaluating mobility: students see 3-vs-2 and assume an automatic advantage even when the majority is fixed or blockaded.
- Pushing too early: the first instinct is b5/c5/e5/f5 without improving the piece that must support the break.
- Confusing a majority with a passed pawn: the majority is a potential passer; it still needs a favorable exchange or break.
- Ignoring the opponent’s counterplay: especially on the opposite wing or through a central break.
- Automatic simplification: students assume exchanges always help the side with the majority; a defender may welcome exchanges that make a blockade easier.
- Missing vacated squares: a pawn advance can improve a knight, queen or rook by opening a square/file behind the pawn.
- Passive defence: students rarely consider a minority attack as a way to damage an enemy majority before it becomes mobile.
10-minute follow-up drill
Show Exercises 1, 4, 7, 9 and 10 for two minutes each. Do not ask for a full calculation. Require only four items: (1) identify the majority, (2) name the potential passer, (3) name the opponent’s restraining idea, and (4) choose "prepare / push / restrain". Score one point per item. The goal is diagnosis speed, not move memorization.
Spaced-review question (7-14 days)
You have a 3-vs-2 queenside majority and both kings are castled short. Before pushing a pawn, name four conditions that should make you more confident the advance is correct.
Expected themes: mobility/no blockade, supporting pieces are ready, the opponent lacks a strong counterbreak, the resulting exchanges favor the future passer, and the move is tactically sound.
Source inventory
Theory: printed pages 168-178 / PDF pages 169-179. Original exercises selected: 209-218. The project topic index lists only PDF page 338 for the exercise range; visual inspection shows that Positions 215-218 continue on printed page 338 / PDF page 339. That single boundary page was therefore included to complete the stated 209-218 set.
